Thopen, a Brazilian solar power producer, is evaluating Bitcoin mining as a solution to monetize surplus energy from the country's expanding renewable sector. CEO Gustavo Ribeiro revealed the company's exploration of cryptocurrency mining operations to address Brazil's electricity oversupply challenges.
Ribeiro, who also serves as CEO of Thopen's majority owner Pontal Energy, told local outlet BN Americas that the company is considering expanding into Bitcoin mining. The strategy involves deploying data centers and mining operations near energy loads to absorb locally generated power that would otherwise be curtailed.
Curtailment Challenges and Potential Solutions
Brazil faces an oversupply of electricity driven by rapid growth in its renewable energy industry. Solar power suppliers across the nation encounter curtailment issues, which limit the amount of energy they can supply to the grid. Ribeiro characterized curtailment as a significant challenge for the sector, viewing energy conversion into capital through Bitcoin mining as a viable solution.
Global Trend: Energy Producers Embrace Crypto Mining
An early October Reuters report indicated several crypto mining companies were negotiating with Brazilian electricity providers to capitalize on the country's renewable power surplus. The country's government planned to solicit two rounds of bidding in 2026 for hydroelectric and fossil-fuel thermal power plants, according to an August Reuters report. These measures aim to secure reliable energy and reduce dependence on intermittent sources like wind and solar.
The energy-to-crypto strategy extends beyond Brazil's borders. Union Jack Oil, a publicly traded United Kingdom-based energy company, announced plans over the summer to convert natural gas from its West Newton site into electricity for Bitcoin mining operations. The company describes the initiative as an "oil-to-crypto" monetization project.
Canadian agricultural firm AgriFORCE Growing Systems launched a similar initiative in June. The company announced it would use stranded gas to power 120 Bitcoin mining rigs, with expansion plans for additional capacity. These international examples demonstrate growing interest among energy producers in cryptocurrency mining as a revenue stream.
