The notion that “data is the new oil” has become a common saying, largely because of its truth. Data is increasingly critical, evolving beyond analytics and insights to become the driving force behind the artificial intelligence industry's growth.
However, similar to oil, high-quality data appears to be a finite resource, creating an insatiable demand within the AI industry.
Introducing OORT's DataHub Launchpad
OORT, a decentralized data cloud for AI, has announced the global launch of its DataHub Launchpad. The company positions this new service as the "TikTok for Data," aiming to address multiple challenges simultaneously. Beyond serving AI developers, it seeks to solve the problem of growing Web3 communities.
The platform operates as a marketplace where AI projects and social media influencers can define "campaign types" and specify their data requirements.
Campaign Types and Rewards
AI data collection campaigns are designed for AI developers. They describe the specific types of data they need, enabling contributors to collect it and earn rewards. Social media campaigns differ, involving influencers and brands creating data tasks that incentivize followers to participate in data collection. For example, a social media personality might request users to upload videos or images of colorful hairstyles to their Instagram account, tagging the influencer. Followers would receive incentives for this, akin to online quest platforms like Zealy.
Survey campaigns are also available, focusing on gathering user feedback for various products and services.
In all campaign types, users are rewarded with OORT tokens for their participation. This model allows projects to pay a global audience to foster community growth and acquire the high-quality AI training data they require, while influencers and brands can expand their online communities through these incentives.
Public Access and Vision
OORT made DataHub Launchpad available in early access for whitelisted projects last month. As of today, it is open to anyone seeking a low-cost source of quality data, community engagement, or an opportunity for additional income.
"It’s a win-win: projects get the diverse, human-generated data they desperately need, while users get rewarded for their time and contribution," stated OORT founder and Chief Executive Dr. Max Li. "We’re excited to see a vibrant community grow around this concept, similar to how platforms like TikTok have connected creators and audiences."
Early Successes and Data Monetization
Although the platform is newly accessible to the public, OORT has already cultivated a substantial community of data creators and achieved notable progress. In July, their contributions were compiled into the company's first image dataset and subsequently listed on data marketplaces such as Google Cloud’s Analytics Hub, the Databricks Marketplace, and the Snowflake Marketplace. This dataset is available, in whole or in part, to enterprises needing high-quality images for AI training, with prices ranging from two cents to 10 cents per image.
To ensure fair compensation for contributors, the data they provide is tokenized on the blockchain, allowing for traceability back to its source. This enables OORT to reward each individual contributor every time a company accesses their data.
Addressing Data Scarcity and Community Building
OORT's DataHub Launchpad represents a significant real-world test for decentralized data collection's potential to meet an urgent demand. The internet's utility for AI developers is diminishing, exacerbated by the proliferation of AI-generated content. Much of the world's remaining data is held by private companies that are either unwilling to share it or charge substantial fees for access. OORT anticipates strong demand for the high-quality, targeted datasets it aims to provide.
The platform also aims to assist in community growth. Many brands, projects, and aspiring influencers struggle to attract an audience, yet building a sustainable community following is crucial for their success. OORT offers a method to achieve this by rewarding followers for their interactions and providing opportunities for additional revenue streams through the monetization of datasets created by their fanbases.
If OORT can effectively help individuals and projects build audiences while simultaneously supporting the AI industry's expansion, its DataHub Launchpad could prove to be a truly groundbreaking initiative.
