Pentagon Rolls Out New AI Platform for U.S. Personnel
The Pentagon has unveiled GenAI.mil, a new artificial intelligence platform specifically designed for military and civilian workers, which runs on Google Gemini. The launch was announced in a video shared on Tuesday, where Secretary of War Pete Hegseth stated that the system aims to provide U.S. personnel with direct access to AI tools to "revolutionize the way we win."
Pete emphasized the significance of AI in modern warfare, declaring, "The future of American warfare is here, and it’s spelled AI." He also acknowledged the rapid advancements made by adversaries, noting, "As technologies advance, so do our adversaries. But here at the War Department, we are not sitting idly by." He confirmed that Google Gemini is the initial model being deployed and that these systems are now being placed "directly into the hands of every American warrior."
Expanding AI Access Across Defense Staff
According to Pete, GenAI.mil will enable users to conduct in-depth research, format documents, and analyze video and imagery at high speeds with a single click. He explained that these tools are intended to accelerate intelligence work and administrative tasks, reducing the manual workload for personnel.
He further indicated that this launch is just the beginning of the department's AI initiatives, with plans to continuously introduce new systems. "We will continue to aggressively field the world’s best technology to make our fighting force more lethal than ever before," he stated.
Pete highlighted the platform's foundation in American technology, asserting, "And all of it is American-made." He concluded his remarks with an optimistic outlook on AI's potential: "The possibilities with AI are endless. Now, let’s get to work."
Strategic Importance of AI Dominance
Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering Emil Michael reinforced the urgency of AI development, stating, "There is no prize for second place in the global race for AI dominance."
Michael confirmed the swift deployment of these capabilities across government staff, announcing, "We are moving rapidly to deploy powerful AI capabilities like Gemini for Government directly to our workforce." He further articulated the strategic imperative for U.S. leadership in AI, declaring, "AI is America’s next Manifest Destiny, and we’re ensuring that we dominate this new frontier."
Google's Role and Scale of Deployment
Google CEO Sundar Pichai commented on the collaboration, noting Google's long-standing relationship with government agencies. He distinguished this rollout by its unprecedented scale and reach. "Through this deployment of Google Cloud’s Gemini for Government offering, more than 3 million civilian and military personnel will be able to access the same advanced AI that businesses use every day to drive administrative efficiency and greater business productivity," Pichai said.
He added that the systems are hosted within Google's secure infrastructure and described the initiative as "a significant step in accelerating AI adoption across the public sector."
Context and Training Initiatives
This launch aligns with President Donald Trump's release of America’s AI Action Plan, which the White House stated outlines nearly 100 federal actions to accelerate U.S. innovation in artificial intelligence.
In addition to providing access, the Pentagon has announced that free training will be offered on GenAI.mil to ensure staff can confidently utilize the platform. The system is designed with web-grounding against Google Search to mitigate the risk of hallucinations and inaccurate outputs.
