Samsung Electronics has unveiled its first multi-folding smartphone, the Galaxy Z TriFold. This new device represents Samsung’s strategic effort to bolster its standing in an industry anticipated to see heightened competition in 2026.
During the unveiling on Tuesday, the company emphasized that the new foldable device is designed for discerning customers rather than for mass production. The Galaxy Z TriFold is Samsung’s latest move to compete with Chinese rivals, including Xiaomi and Huawei.
The Galaxy Z TriFold is priced at N3.5 million (approximately $2,440.17). It features three panels that can unfold to create a 253.1-millimeter (10-inch) display. This makes the device nearly 25% larger than Samsung's most recent foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Commenting on this new addition, Alex Lim, Samsung Electronics Executive Vice President and head of the Korea Sales & Marketing Office, expressed his belief that the TriFold could stimulate further growth in key markets.
“I believe the foldable market will continue to grow, and the TriFold in particular could act as a catalyst that drives more explosive growth in key parts of the segment,” he stated.

Regarding pricing, Lim noted that sharp increases in memory chip and other component costs have made the selling price a challenging decision. The Galaxy Z TriFold supports superfast charging, capable of powering the phone to 50% in just 30 minutes, and it features Samsung’s largest battery among its flagship models.
The device, manufactured in South Korea, is scheduled to go on sale domestically on December 12th. It will subsequently be rolled out in China, Singapore, Taiwan, and the UAE before the end of the year.
Foldable Phones: Samsung Ramps Up for Competition with Galaxy Z TriFold
According to Counterpoint research, foldable phones are projected to represent less than 2% of the total smartphone market this year, and are expected to constitute under 3% by 2027. In its pursuit of leadership in production, Samsung is focused on showcasing advanced technology.
The report indicated that Samsung’s shipment share in the foldable market surged to 64% in the third quarter, a significant increase from 9% in the previous quarter. This demonstrates Samsung’s market strength and its objective to gain a competitive edge.
With the foldable smartphone market anticipated to grow by 14% this year, followed by annual growth in the 30% range in 2026 and 2027, competition is intensifying.

Huawei has already taken a pioneering step with the launch of the industry’s first TriFold phone in September 2024. Apple is also expected to enter this segment, with its first foldable device anticipated for release next year.
However, analysts suggest that high production costs may present a barrier for manufacturers considering mass production of such devices.
