Authorities have arrested two Ukrainian nationals in connection with the murder of the 21-year-old son of Charkiv’s deputy mayor in Vienna. The suspects, including a 19-year-old fellow student, had fled to Ukraine following the attack and are now in custody.

The victim, identified as Sergey K.’s son, was brutally murdered after being targeted for access to his cryptocurrency holdings. Authorities confirmed that the two Ukrainians forced him to reveal passwords to two crypto wallets, emptied the accounts, and then killed him.

The victim’s body was discovered on November 26 in a burned-out Mercedes in the Donaustadt district. Investigators reported that he had been severely beaten, suffocated, and ultimately set on fire. Surveillance footage shows the suspects purchasing a gasoline container prior to the crime. Both suspects fled to Ukraine immediately after the attack; Austrian authorities later handed the case over to Ukrainian officials for prosecution.

Targeted for Crypto Wealth

The incident highlights the growing risks associated with cryptocurrency wealth, especially among young investors. The attackers reportedly withdrew substantial amounts of digital currency from the victim’s wallets, with one suspect found carrying a large sum in US dollars. Experts note that high-value crypto wallets can become targets for violent crimes, underscoring security challenges in the sector.

The victim had reportedly been lured to a hotel garage where the initial assault occurred. The attack then escalated to the Mercedes, where the fatal beating and arson took place. Austrian authorities confirmed the severity of the injuries, with most of the victim’s body burned and extensive head trauma reported.

The case has sparked renewed discussions on cryptocurrency safety and the need for secure storage practices. Analysts emphasize the importance of multi-factor authentication, cold wallets, and careful management of private keys, particularly for individuals with significant digital assets.

The case comes amid heightened concern over violent crimes targeting crypto holders. Similarly, the body of Kevin Mirshahi, a well-known Canadian crypto influencer who disappeared in June, was discovered on October 30 at Île-de-la-Visitation Park in Montreal, marking the tragic conclusion to a months-long search, according to local media outlet The Gazette.
