UBS has officially completed the first-ever on-chain redemption of a tokenized fund in a production environment, marking a major milestone for blockchain adoption in traditional finance. The transaction was conducted in collaboration with Chainlink and DigiFT, leveraging smart contracts on the Ethereum network.
The redemption involved the UBS USD Money Market Investment Fund Token (uMINT), a digital representation of a regulated money market fund. UBS used Chainlink’s Digital Transfer Agent (DTA) standard to link conventional financial messaging systems, including Swift, with blockchain-based fund operations. This allowed automated subscription and redemption processes to execute seamlessly through smart contracts.
Bridging Traditional Finance and Blockchain
By connecting Swift’s messaging framework to on-chain workflows, UBS demonstrated how established financial infrastructure can directly interact with decentralized networks without replacing existing systems. This innovation highlights interoperability, a crucial step toward the institutional adoption of digital assets.
DigiFT, acting as the on-chain fund distributor, facilitated the end-to-end process. The DTA standard enabled traditional instructions from financial institutions to trigger blockchain-based asset movements, reducing settlement time and increasing transparency.
UBS emphasized that the test took place in a live production environment, not a sandbox, proving real-world viability for large-scale fund tokenization.
A Milestone for Tokenized Fund Markets
This achievement builds upon Project Guardian, a Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS)-led initiative exploring tokenization for global financial institutions. UBS, which has been part of Project Guardian since 2023, said the uMINT redemption demonstrates the next phase of integration between regulated finance and blockchain automation.
Analysts view the development as a key step toward digitizing the $100 trillion global fund management industry, where smart contracts could revolutionize how investors subscribe, redeem, and transfer fund shares.
